Halflings are known for being small of stature, but big of heart. They have a reputation for their quick wits, resourcefulness, and steady nerves. Most halflings are warm, kind, and cheerful people with an appreciation for good food, a comfortable hearth, and a good story.

Halflings are practical and down-to-earth. They lack the driving ambition common in humans, and thus never formed a kingdom or empire of their own. Instead, they typically live in tight-knit communities, often near settlements of other races. Halflings have a great affinity for water, and often build their communities near or even on bodies of water.

Halflings don’t recognize royalty or nobility of their own, but rather look to family and community elders to guide them. This focus on tradition and community has allowed halflings to maintain their culture for many centuries, regardless of the rise and fall of empires around them. Their ability to appear harmless has kept them safely at the edges during countless periods of warfare and political strife.

For some halflings, familiar routine and a quiet life hold little appeal. Driven by an insatiable wanderlust, groups of these halflings set out centuries ago to see the world, and they still travel its many roads today. They are known as the Traveling People, and their brightly-colored wagons traverse the length and breadth of Calthera in search of new stories, interesting people, and the uncertainty of what waits around the next bend in the road.

Halflings are fond of stories, legends, and songs, and their culture is rich in oral traditions. Halfling folktales contain vast amounts of lore about people and events long past. Many halflings are able to recall important information about the history, religion, and culture of other races, but that information is usually wrapped in a fable.

Physical Qualities

Halflings stand about 4 feet tall and weigh about 80 pounds. They resemble small humans and are proportioned like human adults. Halflings have the same range of complexions as humans, but most halflings have dark hair and eyes. Most halfling males don’t have beards, but many have long, full sideburns. Halflings of both genders often wear complicated hairstyles, featuring complex braiding and weaving.

Halflings typically dress in clothes that match their surroundings and prefer earth tones and various shades of green. Their clothing and gear feature woven textures and stitching. Birds, river patterns, boats, and fish are common images in halfling art and decoration.

Halflings have life spans comparable to humans.

According to halfling legend, Melora and Sehanine created the halflings together, giving the race a love of nature and the gift of stealth. When their interest waned, Melora and Sehanine stopped looking after the race, or so the legends go, and halflings made their own way in the world. They say Avandra, the goddess of luck, admired their resourcefulness and adopted them, favoring them with good fortune. Not all halflings worship Avandra as their primary deity, but almost all honor her and say a quiet prayer of thanks when a stroke of great fortune favors them.
