Pelwood is a neighborhood in northwest Calatan. It is the greenest area in the city, filled with tall trees, flowering shrubs, and creeping ivy on many of the buildings.
Centuries ago, the Pelwood was an actual forest of hundreds of acres. At its center lived the Woodhawk elf tribe, and their druids worshiped in their sacred grove. Over time, logging and the intrusion of human settlements led to the forest shrinking gradually but steadily. As the city of Calatan was founded and quickly grew into a major center of power, it sprawled outward until the remnants of the Pelwood were soon a part of it. Now, encircled by the protective walls of the city, Pelwood is a small bastion of nature within the heart of the city. Many elves make their homes here, and at the center, the Woodhawk elves still tend their sacred grove. Many consider this an illogical home for nature-loving druids, but the elves argue that they – and their trees – were there first. Why should they leave? The result is a solace for those who seek a respite from the bustling capital of Arathorn.
Besides the grove at its heart, Pelwood is mostly residential, and its inhabitants are mostly elves. A few halflings and humans live here as well, but dwarves mostly shun the area, preferring the comforting stone structures of Dwarftown. There are a few basic markets here, and one can find outfitters for wilderness treks as well as those who sell the products the elves excel at creating: herbs, natural remedies, and other wood crafts.
