Lembas is a slightly sweet, dense square of bread, made with a secret recipe by elves. The cakes are a golden brown on the outside, while the inside is a cream color. Its name roughly translates in Common as “bread for the journey,” and it is an elven staple for long trips. The cakes are very nutritious, and stay fresh for months when unbroken and kept wrapped in leaves from the mallorn tree.
Elves will often present gifts of lembas to friends or loved ones who are leaving for a long journey as a token of luck. The secret of lembas is closely guarded, and it is thus rarely given to non-elves.
